A lot has change when it comes to hysterectomy ,from the technique to the number of days you spend in the hospitals. With open hysterectomy ,it not uncommon for the patient to stay 2-4 days in the hospital .

Hystrectomies in the past were very different , they were very common , they were routinly done using a 10-15 cm incison in the abdomen, and patient was expected to stay 2-4 days in the hospital.and to use pain medications for extended period of time!

All of the above has changed! Minimally invasive techniques implented by gynecological surgeons can be used in more than 95% of the cases of hystrectomies, protocols are applied to facilitate early discharge, without any compromise to the safety, and patient staisfaction.

Some factors may be predict an overnight stay after hystrectomy, example of these factors include:

  •    Older age and other pre-existing medical conditions (like diabetes, lung disease,...)
  •    Excessive Blood loss
  •    Surgery start time ( surgeries finished after 6 Pm more likely to stay)

 Benifits of Same day discharge:

  • Patients prefer the room in their  home than a room in the hospital!
  • faster recovery
  • less chance of developing blood clots in the legs.
  • less chance of hospital acquired infection.
  • returning to eating and drinking sooner

The  most recent studies showed that its possible to discharge 95 % of the patients after a minimally invasive hystrectomy, without sacrifying the patient safety and satisfaction. also most importantly without increasing the chances of an early  second visit to the emergency room for any issue!
