just say no

the ways to perform gynecologic surgery has dramatically changed over the last few decades, however the universal adoption of these techniques is some how slow.

Offered Open Surgery? Just say no!

Ok ! ,May be seek another opinion from a specialized gynecologic surgeon !

women may undergo hystrectomy for different reasons, causes can be broadly classified into benign conditions and maligant conditions, while there are known very valid  reasons to undergo open surgeries for some malignant gynecologic conditions, the primary approach  in benign conditions should be a minimally invasive approach in the vast majority of cases.

If you were offered only the open surgery option for your benign hystrectomy ,You should seek a second opinion from a highly experienced GYN Surgeon.

When referring to minimally invasive approach ,what we mean by that  is an approach that uses the smallest incsions possible, with the shortest stay in the hospital, resulting in the least pain and fastest recovery.this includes vaginal surgery, laparoscopic and robotic surgery.

The most recent reasearch in the US is showing that the adoption of minimally invasive approach is still less than ideal.studies showed  variable rates of adoption of minimally invasive approach between 50% in some places ,with the rate reaching above 90% in the specialized centers.also studies showed  racial disparities .

Consulting with a specialized gynecologic surgeon ensure that you are given all the possible treatment options,so that you are able to make your truly informed decision .

In my opinion,an advanced gynecologic surgeon may be able to achieve utilization rate of minimally invasive approach  above 95% , that means less than 5% rate for open hystrectomy for benign conditions, and that is why you should say no  (and seek a specialized GYN surgeon opinion)!
